Carvalho would certainly tick some of the boxes when it comes to replacing Gerrard

The time that’s passed since the last ‘silly season’ is almost as much as the time we have to wait for the next, but that hasn’t meant that the rumours have let up. Not one jot.

Today, we’re off to Portugal and Sporting Lisbon, with the Mirror – amongst others – reporting that the Reds are showing an interest in the club’s young midfield star, William Carvalho.

The paper reports that Liverpool were dead-set on Roma’s Miralem Pjanic and refused to be put off by the £37 million price-tag, however the Roma hierarchy rejected Liverpool’s interest, insisting that the midfielder was going nowhere.

Disappointing – if true – of course, but you have to accept a club’s stance on their own players.

However, that now supposedly means that the club are looking at Carvalho as an alternative with which to replace Steven Gerrard in the summer. Either player would bring great qualities but it’s debatable whether they even occupy a vaguely similar position, nevermind a role similar to the out-going Liverpool captain.

The 22-year old is highly rated across Europe and will no doubt attract a number of suitors during the summer. The midfielder would command a fee in the region of £20 million and is fairly experienced (having already made 11 appearances for Portugal) for such a young player, although it remains to be seen whether the rumours prove true given the sheer number of players the club are linked with daily.

Would Carvalho be up to Liverpool’s standards? Let us know your thoughts on the player below.
