Clyne was highly impressive against Rubin Kazan tonight

GK/Defence

Simon Mignolet – When a goalkeeper has barely anything to do, it’s hard to give him a truthful rating. Mignolet – quite literally – had nothing to do all game, with Rubin having 7 shots but not a single one on target. So a 6/10 seems fair. Rating – 6

Nathaniel Clyne – The right back was excellent tonight, doing great work to ensure that the Russian side got nowhere near his own goal, whilst making numerous great forward runs. One particular lung-buster in the second half was reminiscent of a 100 meter sprinter – you’ll be seeing GIFs of it for weeks! Rating – 7

Dejan Lovren – It is with great pleasure (and quite a bit of relief) that we’re able to give Dejan Lovren a 7/10. Between himself and Sakho, the Croatian defender ensured that little that Rubin did got them near to the Liverpool goal. It was easily one of his most impressive displays in a Red shirt, with just a yellow card the only mark against. Rating – 7

Mamadou Sakho – Another top class performance from Sakho, who stepped into the role of captain from the back, despite Milner’s presence on the pitch. Sakho barked orders to his team mates, organised those around him and his general attitude each time Rubin made tentative moves to come forward was to laugh and swat them aside. Top class. Rating – 7.5

Alberto Moreno – The full back did well, for the most part, but a lot of his work in the final third was slightly disappointing. His crossing was quite awry, at times, and he – like a number of team mates – often made the wrong choices. Defensively sound, though. Rating – 7
