Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has backed striker Danny Ings to make an impact if he is chosen to play in the first team for the Reds.

The 24 year old returned to full fitness in the summer after sustaining a serious knee injury last season, but has yet to feature this campaign in any competition for the Merseyside club. He has appeared for Michael Beale’s Under 23 side and Klopp told the club’s official website that he wants to pay Ings back for all the hard work he is putting in on the training field:

“Danny is working hard and good, but the situation is like it is – we have a lot of strikers. He is close… what can I say? He is a wonderful boy. It’s not the easiest thing when a player works really hard and then he is not involved, so of course you want to give the player something back for the unrest. It is not always possible – but as soon as it is possible, I will pay back.”

Whether that hard work will be repaid tonight we will have to see as Jurgen Klopp is expected to start Belgian striker Divock Origi in the EFL cup tie against Derby County. At the start of the season, Klopp described Origi as lacking rhythm so he will get the opportunity tonight to perhaps regain it. In terms of Ings, the most he can probably hope for is a place on the bench with some minutes coming on as a substitute.
