Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is ready to bolster his defensive ranks further in the summer transfer window, after splashing a club-record £75m fee to land Virgil Van Dijk from Southampton in January.

The Reds are reported to be in the market for a top-class defensive partner for the Netherlands international and the latest reports claim that they’ll go head-to-head with arch-rivals Manchester United in the market.

The Manchester Evening News claim that the two Premier League heavyweights will fight it out for Roma centre-back Kostas Manolas in the market, having watched the Greek defender in action during the Champions League.

Manolas’ heroic performance saw him net a dramatic third goal for Roma against Barcelona, sealing a 3-0 victory at the Stadio Olimpico that put the aggregate scoreline deadlocked at 4-4, with the side from Rome then advancing on away goals.

Roma are desperate to keep Manolas at the club, particularly after losing superstar winger Mohamed Salah to Liverpool last year, but he could command a move away from the Champions League semi-finalists.
