Origi loan was a mistake

Liverpool have enjoyed a fairly successful season to date and it could end as a historic one if they beat Real Madrid in the Champions League final on 26 May.

The Merseyside club have rightfully received widespread praise for their attacking style of football and they have managed to secure a top-four spot in the Premier League.

Manager Jurgen Klopp has continued the rebuilding job at Anfield, but he shouldn’t be exempt from criticism.

One epic blunder made by the Reds this season has been in loaning out highly-rated youngster Divock Origi, leaving Domnic Solanke and Divock Origi as back-up options in attack.

Liverpool have fortunately had a scintillating front three of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane to fire in a shedload of goals this season.

However, centre-forwards Ings and Solanke have managed a combined total of two goals between them all season.

There has been no sufficient options in attack off the bench and this is still something that could come back to bite Klopp in the European showdown with Madrid.

Liverpool will surely be reluctant to throw on Solanke for the final 10 minutes if they need a goal, as he has shown very little during his first season at Anfield to suggest he is ready and Ings looks the shadow of a player he was a few years ago due to injury.

Meanwhile, Origi has had to graft out on loan with relegation candidates Wolfsburg and he has still chipped in with seven goals in 35 appearances.

The 23-year-old is a promising Belgian striker that has shown glimpses of real quality in his Liverpool career and he certainly could have continued his progression if he had remained at Anfield in the 2017/18 season.

He should be given a reprieve next year to prove himself in the Premier League and is certainly much more a goal threat than counterparts Solanke or Ings.

Liverpool supporters can hope that their dynamic attacking trio have the firepower to rip through Madrid in their upcoming fixture, but if they were struck with an injury blow it could leave Klopp seriously regretting his Origi decision.
