BBC pundit Alan Shearer has lauded Liverpool defender Joe Gomez for his “powerful” display against Brighton at the weekend, saying that the youngster deserves an England call-up for his early season form.

Gomez helped the Reds to their third consecutive win to start the season as they ran out 1-0 winners over the Seagulls, with Mohamed Salah scoring the only goal of the game.

Shearer has now named Gomez as his ‘Featured Player’ in his official Premier League Team of the Week, and praised his assured display at Anfield.

“Gomez put on another powerful display against Brighton. He should now earn a call-up to the England squad,” said Shearer.

OPINION

Gomez was indeed impressive against Brighton, and there is no doubt that the young defender will be in the England squad when it is announced soon. Gomez was in fact unlucky to miss out on selection for the World Cup after injury ruled him out of the tournament, but it looks like his recovery over summer has gone perfectly after his stellar start to the season. If Gomez can stay fit in the coming season then there is no reason to think that he could not become a key player for both Liverpool and England, with Gareth Southgate sure to keep going with his policy of selecting young players who are in form. While his persistent injury troubles recently do raise some concerns, Liverpool’s squad depth should mean that Jurgen Klopp is able to manage him well enough to avoid any more serious setbacks. And, should that happen, then Gomez’s blossoming partnership with Virgil van Dijk looks like it could become a serious force for the Reds in the coming years.
