Liverpool have no interest in signing Borussia Dortmund playmaker Mario Gotze at this moment in time, despite comments made by his former team-mate Kevin Großkreutz, according to Anfield HQ reporter Oliver Bond.

The reliable journalist, who has been featured by the Liverpool Echo and the Mirror, claimed via his personal twitter account on Thursday that Jurgen Klopp has no interest in reuniting with his old Borussia Dortmund star.

Gotze’s old Dortmund team mate Großkreutz recently claimed that the 2014 World Cup winner should move to Anfield in a bid to reignite his stalling career.

“Maybe it would be good for him to go abroad in the winter to find a bit more peace and bring his career back on track,” Großkreutz told Sky Sports Germany. “Klopp knows him quite well, he would be a good fit for Liverpool.”

OPINION

Four or five years ago any shred of news linking Liverpool with Gotze would have been hungrily preyed upon by Reds supporters. Now, Großkreutz’s comments have merely been met with mild indifference. The fact is that the 26-year-old is simply not the player he used to be, and so Liverpool are correct not to pursue a move for him – no matter what the German’s former team mate might say. It’s logical to identify Klopp as the man to fix Gotze’s ailing career, they made magic together before at Dortmund, but it’s not really worth the risk for Liverpool at this stage. Klopp has a terrific squad assembled already, full of players who are capable of performing Gotze’s role to a high level, so why do Liverpool need the Dortmund man? The truth is that they don’t, and to pursue him would be borne out of vanity rather than any on-the-field decision making. No, this one is best left alone.
