Former Liverpool man Stephen Warnock has claimed that Reds defender Joe Gomez is ‘very close’ to a return from injury.

The 6ft 2in England international [Source: Transfermarkt] hasn’t featured for Jurgen Klopp’s team since facing Burnley at the start of December.

However, Warnock believes he’ll be back soon: “It was a period [recently] where they’ve had these injuries so [it’s good] to get those players back and give them an extra 10 days to try and get as many fit as you can,” he told Sky Sports.

“Joe Gomez is very close to being ready from what I hear. It will be a nice period for Liverpool. You know that when you come back it’s the business end of the season.”

OPINION

This is an interesting tidbit from Warnock. Having Gomez out injured has been tough for Liverpool, because the club have no one else as good as him to partner Virgil van Dijk. His absence has been even more painful due to the injuries also suffered by Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren, although the Cameroonian returned against Crystal Palace last time out. Still, Gomez and Van Dijk is undoubtedly the club’s most reliable centre back partnership, while Gomez’s ability to play at right back is also extremely useful for Klopp. All in all, then, it’s hugely positive news if Warnock is correct about the timetable for his return. As the pundit says, we are approaching the business end of the season now and so Klopp will want all of his best talent available. Gomez certainly falls under that bracket. Hopefully the former Liverpool man is right and we see the England star back in a red shirt soon.
