Some things just aren’t meant to be. Certain transfers that just don’t come off, heavily hyped youngsters that just don’t live up to the billing.

Taiwan Awoniyi comfortably falls into both of those categories. The Nigerian striker was signed back in 2015 but has yet to make an appearance for the first team due to a series of work permit issues.

That has led to several alone spells for the 21-year-old, the latest of which has been at Belgian side Mouscron – a move that has seen the forward come alive.

Six goals in seven games, and six wins and a draw to boot, have seen the player’s profile rose meteorically.

Awoniyi’s star has shot up so quickly, in fact, that several European sides are understood to be eyeing up a move for him.

Chief amongst those are Schalke, with Goal reporting that the German side have made an approach for the African.

According to the report, Liverpool would seek in excess of £10 million for their prodigy, and if they can fetch that sort of fee, they should take the money and run.

Awoniyi is unlikely to ever replicate the kind of form he has found in Belgium in the English game, even if his work permit issues were magically solved, and in truth, there’s not even any guarantee that he will be in this sort of purple patch this time next season.

As a result, the Reds should accept that the deal was never meant to be, take the money, and wish Awoniyi all the very best.
