OPINION

There was understandable concern amongst the Liverpool supporters when Reds manager Jurgen Klopp revealed that centre back Virgil van Dijk had suffered a knock against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

The 27-year-old had a collision with Spurs star Moussa Sissoko that left him needing an ice pack, but the club supplied fans with an encouraging glimpse of training on Tuesday.

Liverpool posted a photo on their official Twitter account that showed Van Dijk playing in goal during training at Melwood, suggesting that the issue he picked up at Anfield on Sunday isn’t anything to be concerned about.

If the Dutchman is clowning around and saving shots in goal then he’s unlikely to be seriously damaged after Sunday. And if he’s doing that on Tuesday then he’ll surely be available to face Southampton on Friday.

That conclusion will surely leave the Reds supporters smiling from ear to ear. Losing Van Dijk, even for a single game, would have been a devastating blow to the team’s Premier League title hopes, and so Klopp will be over the moon that his star man seems to be recovering quickly.

There is no player that Liverpool rely upon more than Van Dijk. He is the ship upon which the team’s entire title challenge has been anchored and the prospect of losing him is enough to send any Reds fan into a cold sweat.

However, after the club’s Twitter post, the supporters’ fears have surely been alleviated. Van Dijk looks healthy and in good spirits, thank goodness. Everyone associated with the club will be breathing a big sigh of relief when/if the former Southampton man starts against his old club on Friday.
