For a long time now it has appeared obvious that Liverpool attacker Daniel Sturridge is destined for the Anfield exit door this summer.

The 29-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and there would appear to be little to no chance that he is granted an extension. His performance against Huddersfield Town on Friday night shows why that must be the case.

It’s clear now that the England international should never play for the Reds again. He produced an absolute horror show against the Terriers, despite his team running out comfortable 5-0 winners at Anfield.

Naby Keita, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane all got on the scoresheet against Jan Siewert’s side – the latter two scored braces – but Sturridge never once threatened the visitor’s goal.

It was a surprise when Jurgen Klopp handed the former Chelsea man a start, although perhaps he was merely resting Roberto Firmino for Wednesday’s monster Champions League clash with Barcelona. However, the error of the German’s ways was made abundantly obvious very early on.

Sturridge, for whatever reason, dropped bizarrely deep throughout the first half. Whether he was told to do so or merely took it upon himself, it was completely ridiculous. He’s not the creative fulcrum of the team – he was in the side to finish moves off not to start them.

It’s hugely evident that Sturridge simply doesn’t have a future in this Liverpool team. He sticks out like a sore thumb; he simply doesn’t have the technical ability to excel in such a high level side.

So while he has been a fine servant to the football club, it’s time that Sturridge leaves Anfield this summer. At this point, he should have kicked his last ball as a Liverpool player.
