Sky Sports transfer guru Jim White has provided some clarification on the new Liverpool contract signed by attacker Divock Origi on Wednesday.

The Reds’ revealed on their official website that the 24-year-old had put pen to paper on a new long-term contract with the European champions.

White had the scoop: “One of the big @ChampionsLeague heroes for @LFC, Divock Origi has signed a new long term deal with the club,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account.

“It’s understood contract has NO release clause so a firm commitment from him to stay long-term.”

OPINION

So, no release clause in the contract. Well, that is excellent news for Liverpool. You see a lot of release clauses in football these days and you always wonder why the clubs allow them to be present in their players’ deals. Well, the Reds are clearly showing us that they don’t play that game. As White says, the absence of a release clause is a firm commitment from Liverpool to Origi that they want him to stay where he is for a long time to come. However, it’s a commitment from Origi to the club, as well. He’s essentially declaring that he is happy in his role as first reserve to the team’s fearsome front three of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane. It’s a vital role he performs and the Reds will be over the moon that he is willing to continue doing what he is doing. The absence of the release clause also ensures that no team can come in and swoop for Origi after his phenomenal exploits last season. So, it appears it’s happy days for everyone involved, doesn’t it?
