Steven Gerrard has revealed that he cannot choose between beating Everton or Manchester United because he hates both of them.

The former Liverpool captain is renowned for his fierce rivalries with both clubs, but has suggested that picking one he’d rather win against is an impossible task.

When posed the conundrum by ex-teammate Peter Crouch for Amazon’s Back of the Net show, he said: “It’s like which one of the Kardashians, that.

“It’s tough. I can’t.

“Yeah, I hate both of them.”

OPINION

Every Liverpool fan will no doubt feel Gerrard’s struggle here. On the one hand, you have your noisy neighbours – pesky local rivals who love to get one up on you but never really bother you otherwise – and on the other you have one of your traditional competitors for major silverware from the next big city over. It certainly is a puzzler, but there’s an argument to be made that right now, with United so far off the pace, the real answer to this question is in fact “neither”, and it is in fact Manchester City who the Reds would want to beat the most. Had they managed that feat last season they would be defending champions right now, and this year, after just one game each, it already looks as if it could be another two horse race to the top. Still, a double over Everton and United would go down a treat.
