England manager Gareth Southgate will sit down for one-on-one talks with Liverpool defender Joe Gomez, according to Sky Sports journalist Kaveh Solhekol.

The reporter revealed the news on his personal Twitter account on Thursday night, after Gomez was booed by his own fans after coming on in the Three Lions’ 7-0 victory over Montenegro at Wembley.

Solhekol outlined Southgate’s response to the situation after the game: “Gareth Southgate says he doesn’t understand why anyone would boo Joe Gomez. Says Gomez has done nothing wrong.

“Will sit down and talk to Gomez to make sure he’s OK. Gomez first in and first out of the England dressing room after the final whistle.”

OPINION

What an absolute disgrace of a situation. Whatever your views on Raheem Sterling being dropped for Thursday’s game after his bust-up with Gomez, the Liverpool man cannot and should not be blamed for what happened. By all accounts he was entirely calm throughout the whole thing, with the Manchester City star initiating the ruck and giving the 22-year-old a scar underneath his right eye. As Southgate says, Gomez has done nothing wrong. Plus, this is a really young man who won’t have experienced being booed in this manner by 90,000-odd people. Obviously not every in the stadium booed, in fact it was likely a ridiculous minority, but it was certainly something the player himself picked up on. It’s good that Southgate is planning to – or has already – speak to the Reds star, because you don’t want him to have any lasting damage from an incident like this. The fact that Gomez was first in and first out of the dressing room, though, suggests that he may have taken the booing rather hard.
