Liverpool are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign experienced central defender Ezequiel Garay, according to Spanish outlet El Gol Digital.

It’s claimed the Reds are in advanced negotiations to land the 34-year-old after his contract with Valencia expired at the start of last season.

Since then Garay has been a free agent but unable to find a club after a serious injury ended his campaign last season.

The report, which also outlines the Reds’ pursuit of La Liga based stars Aissa Mandi and Marco Asensio, claims the Reds will sign Garay as additional defensive cover following an injury-hit season.

Capped 32-times by Argentina, Garay has spent the bulk of his club career between Valencia and Benfica but also spent a brief spell with Real Madrid.

L4L’s VIEW

Whilst the logic in signing a player for free is clear for all to see, signing the Argentine after a season out of football would be a curious move.

Had he arrived in January when the Jurgen Klopp was desperately in need of options, then maybe.

But with Ozan Kabak and Nat Phillips forming a strong partnership, with Ben Davies waiting in the wings, the need for an immediate fix isn’t as obvious.

The other defender mentioned in the report, Mandi, is also available for nothing this summer when his Real Betis contract expires and at 29-years-old would make far more sense.
