Juventus winger Federico Chiesa would prefer to join Liverpool over Newcastle United this summer, a fresh transfer rumour has claimed.

The Reds are preparing for the start of the new Premier League season, beginning their pre-season campaign with a 4-2 win away to Karlsruher on Wednesday evening.

Away from the friendly action, Liverpool continue to work hard on potential new signings, with more additions needed on top of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai.

While much of the current focus is on Jurgen Klopp’s midfield – understandable, considering Fabinho and Jordan Henderson are reportedly on the verge of exiting the club – a new update suggests that a new attacking star could make the move to Anfield.

According to journalist Marco Guini, in an interview with TV Play [via Sport Witness], Liverpool and Newcastle are considered options for Chiesa this summer, although the Italian would rather move to the Reds:

“The player would be more inclined to sign for a classic top club, such as Liverpool or Bayern Munich. If Newcastle have the economic strength they will try to take Chiesa. The Newcastle option could only be taken into consideration at the end of the transfer market, in the case of few offers on the plate.”

Our thoughts on the latest Chiesa to Liverpool rumour…

Chiesa is a fantastic footballer – one who won Euro 2020 with Italy back in 2021, due to the tournament being delayed by a year – and he is someone who offers pace and directness out wide, scoring 22 goals and registering 20 assists in 94 appearances for Juve, and 34 and 25 respectively for Fiorentina before he moved to Torin, in a total of 153 games.

While the 25-year-old would provide Liverpool with undoubted quality, there really isn’t a need for him currently, especially when money could be spent on more pressing areas, especially the midfield.

With Mohamed Salah, Luis Suarez, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo all great options already – Ben Doak is also a special young talent who could earn more minutes this season – it is hard to see how Klopp would be able to promise Chiesa regular starts.

Should an attacking star suddenly leave Anfield before the start of the season, the situation may change, but for now it would feel like overkill in the final third.
