Time for these 5 players to stand up this weekend

|

With the Merseyside Derby against Everton at the weekend, Liverpool really need a performance after slipping to 18th place in the league. With much of the blame being put on Roy Hodgson, I think it is also time to focus on some of the players who just haven’t performed so far this season. If we are to get a result against Everton, these players are really going to have to improve on their recent displays:

Christian Poulsen – The Dane has been heavily criticised since arriving from Juventus for £4.5million, and rightfully so. With the exception of his decent display in the 3-2 defeat against Manchester United, Poulsen has looked totally out of his depth playing in the defensive midfield role. There is no doubt he can tackle but his lack of pace means he is never in the right place at the right time to nip in the bud attacks by the opposition. An instance that has typified his displays for Liverpool so far this season was when he was seen ambling back for Blackpool’s second goal two weeks ago for while he should have been protecting the back four near the penalty area, he left the defence exposed as Luke Varney found his way through to score the second goal in first half injury time.

Glen Johnson – Never the best defender, Johnson’s frailties have been exposed on a number of occasions this season, and none more so than in his display against Blackpool. After letting a long diagonal ball run past inside him, he then was run ragged by Luke Varney who twist and turned before Johnson clumsily fouled him in the box to give away a penalty. He then proceeded to keep Varney onside for the second goal to help condemn Liverpool to a humiliating home defeat to the Seasiders. Excellent roaming forward from the right leading many to suggest he should play on the right wing, but as a right back, his first priority is to defend, and he is failing in this duty at the moment.
