Who is this talented Argentine we are rumoured to be tracking?

With all the stuff about Hicks and Gillett, the court case and board meeting tonight, I thought it would be a change to profile a player Liverpool might be interested in. Although he would cost a sizeable fee, the hope is that the Reds’ new owners will give the manager a good sized transfer kitty, and Lyon’s Lisandro Lopez would certainly be an interesting buy. Reports in France and Portugal have both indicated that Lyon are willing to let the player leave in January, and with Liverpool interested in bringing in another striker, the Merseyside club have inevitably been linked with a move.

Lisandro started his career with Racing Club in Argentina’s First division. Not the most powerfully built striker, Lisandro always relied on his speed and intelligence, helping him break into Racing Club’s first team back in 2003. He was the club’s top goalscorer in Argentina’s Apertura (Opening) Championship in 2004, and proceeded to finish the 2004/05 campaign strongly. After 26 goals in 70 league appearances for Racing Club, Porto purchased the player for £2million in the summer of 2005. The Portuguese club have had a good track record of taking young South Americans to Europe, and have taken players such as Diego, Anderson, Lucho Gonzalez and Falcao from Brazil and Argentina. The Portuguese League seems to be the easiest route for many to settle into the European lifestyle, and to get used to the more technical and tactical style of the continent’s leagues.
