“Indeed, I was very close to joining Liverpool”

Newcastle winger Sylvain Marveaux has explained his decision to join the Magpies. He told France Football:

“Indeed, I was very close to joining Liverpool. People knew I was a free agent and I didn’t want to extend at Rennes. In January, Newcastle were the very first to contact me. Then, there was Liverpool, and I gave them my consent. But I never stated it was already done with the Reds. Then, last Thursday and Friday, there were some changes and I made the decision to sign at Newcastle.”

It was speculated that Marveaux had failed a medical at Liverpool due to a long term groin injury but the Frenchman denies this was the case. He hints that there was a last minute disagreement over personal terms:

“The medical at Liverpool went off smoothly, I am fit to play and perfectly healthy. Actually, things already established had to be negotiated again. So I decided to change my mind and sign with Newcastle, who never gave up. It was not a second choice. That club has big impact in England, with a wonderful stadium and amazing fans. The club also has a lot of ambition.”

This week it is former LFC WAG Pamela Camassa!

  • worriedlfc says:

20 mill for henderson and miss out of FREE marveaux. I bet if we offered henderson for marveaux nufc would stick 2 fingers up.

Daglishs transfer history is worrying, he ruined newcastle when he was there not because he’s not a good motivator, coz he sold all there best players and bought john dahl tommason etc.

I guess we’ll neva no wot really happened.
    but really…. who cares.
    Zahid hw u doin

  • m kop says:

Liverpool just got smarter with giving ‘free agents’ fat contracts and signing fee.

Remember Degen when he was coming? Jovanovi?? Cole?
All needed to be offloaded after one season to reduce wage bill, do we need more of that.

You must ask yourself if he was worth 7 mil. for example, would you want Kenny to bring him?

If he isn’t worth 7 mil. to begin with he isn’t good enaugh for Liverpool’s first team, or even as a sub.

  • Dan says:

Well if he’s that good why didn’t chelski sign him. Are you admitting you guys only want sub standard players.. Oh yes I almost forgot you would rather buy a has been for 50 mill

  • steve says:

55 mill for henderson and carrol , you,s really are a laughing stock, plus wages on top of that, where we get this man tiote, ben arfa, and ba for what ? 8 mill , who,s the mugs

    always injured anyway

  • Shane says:

I agree with some of the posts. Our transfers have been dubious. Both Carroll and Henderson overpriced. We seem to pay over the odds. We seem linked with everyone and yet no one of substance. Our squad isn’t good enough and hasn’t been for 20 years and yet we are sitting there with Joe Cole and Co, players never fit to wear a Liverpool shirt. The players we want won’t come as they also have ambitions and not being in Europe means we are pitching for the second tier rather than the elite of world football. Suarez was a coup without a doubt and we have some great young talent but the core of the team is weak. Glenn Johnson is a liability, Gerard is aging and over the past 2 seasons we have played better when he was injured. Carraher Skrtel and Agger all dodgy for different reasons. No left back. No wingers and dare I say it lacking severely in fire power up front. Too much light weight dross. Our re building is along term plan and it will take more than the next 12 months.

    he failed his med

  • Shane says:

I doubt he failed his med. Would you not move to a new job for more money. I would. Additionally living in Berlin I know what its like to move to a foreign country, its hard. So I think that when he say the new French arrivals at Newcastle he felt more comfortable with that. And you have no idea how much that is worth.

  • The Locster says:

worried lfc is spot on, Dalglish was woeful in the transfer market at Newcastle.
His first move – sell Ferdinand and Ginola to replace with…Jon Dahl Tomasson (£2.5m played 27 times) and Des Hamilton (from Bradford City for if the name doesn’t ring any bells – £2m in 1997 – he played 11 times!). Dalglish was also responsible for Andreas Andersson (£3m 25 apps) and the cherry on the cake, Stephane Guivarc’h (£3.5m for just the 2 games)
Oh aye, Kenny knows a good striker when he sees one!
I’d be careful he doesn’t try and bring back Rush and Barnes – like the ‘jobs for the boys’ rubbish he foisted on Newcastle…or his son Paul!
Good luck with your ‘King Kenny’, we’ll be seeing you in mid-table obscurity next May!

  • Andy H says:

I couldn’t give a penny farthing for Marveaux, I’m glad we didn’t sign him because he’s injury prone like Kewell and Cole before him and if a player thinks going to Newcastle is better than going to Liverpool then I don’t want him near us.

  • tom says:

OK lets put a couple of things to bed, as for King Kenny, since xmas, Liverpool’s form was good enough to move LFC up the table and maintained through the season would have been European qualifying place. this was with a squad low on confidence, missing its captain and having to play its RB and LB + using youngsters due to injury’s, i make that a success don’t you?

As for the Carrol signing, he will score plenty, he is young and will learn plenty, no offense to Newcastle, but LFC should be able to provide Carroll with more chances per game with the improved quality around him. best thing about this is that due to the amount Chelsea paid for Torres, he and Suarez was free! again i don’t see this as a bad decision on Kenny’s part? but hey we could of been left with Babel after all i like many other LFC fans thought he could give plenty more but we all got fed up waiting.

I wish Marveaux all the best but he will still be looking up the table at LFC at the end of the season! fact i am afraid

  • Lfc4LifeR says:

I’m new to this football stuff…

Can anyone tell me whether terms are agreed first or a whether a medical happens first??

If it’s terms first, then that would suggest to me that he did fail his medical!

  • Blindside says:

All very interesting but now history! Let’s put it away and move on…

  • Liverpoolian says:

Are you kidding me I mean fully fit carroll is cabaple of scoring lots of goal ow yeah he may not worth 35m but did we had the time think or chose which young player cabable of doing it NO and bye the way fully fit carroll played one game and scored two goals

  • DC says:

Wow is any one really this interested in Marveux, the guy is looking for the biggest pay day Newcastle offered that. LFC no from experience Gerrard, Arelio, Agger, etc groin injuries don’t heal so well and are not about to get caught in a similar trap with Marveux. Also it is very rare unless you are local for players to come to a club for the love of it’s history, money and glory drives them nothing more nothing less

    • AJM says:

Spot on, DC. Players only join for money now and from what I have heard, Marveux joined the mags due to the length of contract offered – same way Nolan joined West Spam for more money and a 5 year contract, and a certain Andy Carrol joined you lot for a 60 grand increase.

We will see how Marveux holds up physically, but if he does, it is a major bargain. Bit of a worry that we have so many suspect players, but guess that’s what happens when you don’t have a huge Sports enterprise funding transfers.
