Newcastle winger Sylvain Marveaux has explained his decision to join the Magpies. He told France Football:

“Indeed, I was very close to joining Liverpool. People knew I was a free agent and I didn’t want to extend at Rennes. In January, Newcastle were the very first to contact me. Then, there was Liverpool, and I gave them my consent. But I never stated it was already done with the Reds. Then, last Thursday and Friday, there were some changes and I made the decision to sign at Newcastle.”

It was speculated that Marveaux had failed a medical at Liverpool due to a long term groin injury but the Frenchman denies this was the case. He hints that there was a last minute disagreement over personal terms:

“The medical at Liverpool went off smoothly, I am fit to play and perfectly healthy. Actually, things already established had to be negotiated again. So I decided to change my mind and sign with Newcastle, who never gave up. It was not a second choice. That club has big impact in England, with a wonderful stadium and amazing fans. The club also has a lot of ambition.”

This week it is former LFC WAG Pamela Camassa!

I would like to say good luck to Marveaux, If he knows that Newcastle are a club with ambition, how come most Newcastle fans on their blogs seem to differ in opinion.

  • Cam says:

“It was not a second choice”
Really…so why did you go to the medical at Liverpool Sylvian?

  • Redman says:

I am gutted my pal in France is always saying how amazin this guy is I can’t believe we can’t even beat Newcastle to a free signing sort it out boys or maybe Henry is becoming wiser after watchin our £20 mil at the under 21 I’d rather we bough lansbury please dont become a laughing stock so much money for so little talent i feel if we don’t push on now we r goin to fall so far behind if were not far enough already !

    • LFCmAD says:

      Man U fan

      • Redman says:

No my friend just an honest fan praying for the return of proper football like wen we distorted Madrid 4-0 in the cl quarters wen I sat in 4th row of the kop thinking wow and I must say that night casilas was my mom it’s just my opinion I for one pray I’m wrong and failing that win the lottery lol

  • dave says:

Redman, be quiet you silly little fool.

  • Liverpool only offered a 3 year contract at £40K per week.
Newcastle offered 5 year contract £40k per week.
    Simples!!

    • zahid says:

hows that simples, if that’s what was offered he could have easily got an extension if he did well. Even if i wasn’t an LFC fan n they offered me 50k on a 1 year contract n NUFC offered a 5 yr deal for the same id still join the bigger better club……YNWA

  • redz says:

he obviously failed the medical,no loss, other wingers out der…

  • Redman says:

Well it seems like were missin some good players already spending big on average players no new stadium and to top it of our change kit is covered in blue and until we sign some players worthy of the hollowed red shirt my opinion won’t change and I’m sure many feel the same

  • Dan says:

Redman. It was all about the wage, 40k against 60k. So the fact he even admits there was an agreement (things already established had to be negotiated again) then he changes his mind as he got a better offer of more bucks points to a guy you really don’t want. A person who goes back on an agreement cannot be trusted to play for you now or in the future. Would’t leave sleep over it.

  • NICK BROWN says:

Am I the only LFC fan worried about the direction of our transfer policy?

    • Terror says:

      Yes!

    • michael says:

what policy? 20mil,22mil,35mil last 3 signings.thats fantastic were you asleep for the last 20 years. LFC is finnally spending with the big boys and your complaining. judge the squad in september window not even open yet

      • vjm says:

But only Suarez is capable of having that much price tag. Do you realy think henderson and andy worth that much. For that much price we would have got marin and mata or banega. We still didnt have full back.
Yes we trust in king but our transfer policy still little bit shaky.

        • rassell says:

couldn’t agree more, as much as my heart tells me to love and trust kenny in what he is doing, right at the back of my head somthing tells me to be worried, seriously henderson and carrol for 55mil sombody is having a luagh at our expences. I hope that i am proved wrong on this but both those players put togeter ain’t worth what we payed for henderson. I know he wants to buy british but this is going a bit to extreme…and missing out on this guy for a few quid after all he was on a free and as much as it hurts me to say that phil jones looks one hell of a player.

  • sib says:

My understanding is that Marveaux did not fail his medical as such.
However, there were sufficient doubts surrounding his fitness to make LFC request that the previously agreed personal terms were adapted to reflect his ongoing fitness and availability; ie LFC wanted his contract to become more of a pay when you play/are available type contract!

Given the Aqua situation LFC’s approach was understandable.

Marveaux clearly did not have the confidence in his own fitness, so took the financially beneficial deal, which I suppose is understandable if you are money driven!

  • daboy says:

Theres a lot of better players out there and Marveaux was only going to be a squad player at best, i am glad they missed out.

  • JP...from The Rock says:

Because some fans are as people say ‘deluded’ and are never happy or have a right to not trust Fat Ashley. After the Hughton, Carroll saga we have a right to be cautious and skeptical of everything. Marveaux is a fantastic signing but I wonder if there is more to the story? Maybe now we lose Gutierrez?

    See what I mean?

So fa our signings have been very good quality but you never know what could be round the corner at Newcastle especially with Fat Ash in charge.

  • Ben says:

So now we know thanks to Billy the Fish who was present at negotiations!!! The internet is great, but it really does bring you into daily contact with a multitude of absolute morons!

  • wayne says:

DAN, Liverpool changed the contract not him.
and a squad player ha ha ha don’t make me laugh, have you not seen this machine play! I’m a Chelsea fan by the way.

  • CM says:

I cant believe liverpool paid 20 million for Jordan Henderson- a below average midfielder

    • Gaz says:

Wow, was Gerrard worth 20mil when he was 20?
Was Lampard? Your an apsolute retard mate. All the stupid fans out there (usually the forigners eg asia) just have no clue what so ever about the club or football for that matter. Hendo is a good signing. United paid the same amount for Jones! a defender

      • Tony says:

You, my friend, have no clue about spelling and grammar. I bet my Asian friends are better educated.

      • dazza says:

couldnt agree more mate henderson in my oppinion is worth 20 mil he looks like going to be same mold a gerrard if that true every1 will be saying what a bargain ffs ….. as well as home grown talent rule liverpool have there heads screwed on get the best british young talent now b4 your forced to go and buy average players for your team cause all the good 1’s are taken keep it up liverpool ynwa !!!!

  • CM says:

your overpaying for everyone and everyone else is laughing

    • Dan says:

dude, Chelsky paid 50 mill for Torres, Manure paid 16 + for Jones and the list can go on and on and Hendo was 16 mill not 20 you doughnut. Only 20 with whatever clauses have been put in for future returns. You can also look at Man City they are the worst of the lot

      • rassell says:

mate torres on form is worth it, you know that as much as i do…carol for 35mil?? Just beuase other clubs are being made a mug out of we should join them should we? We should be realistic about what the players are worth, not go blind cos we got a bit of cash to spend.

        • dazza says:

he aint had form for 2-3 years rassel not worth 50 mil never thought tha when he was a liverpool player sulkin player !!!!!

  • sid says:

henderson looked like crap in the under 21s…fools..

  • zahid says:

He maybe fit or he may not, but the fat of the matter is, every clubs medical team have different criterias the player has to meet n pass, so in our case he probably didn’t pass the vital ones. In NUFC they may have different criterias.

Look at Demba Ba for example in Jan he failed a medical at Stoke, then a day later he signs for West Ham and was fit n playing well, now he passed his NUFC medical, so it doesn’t necesseraly mean your unfit if you fail your medical.

I also know of a couple of lads who had passed medicals a number of years back at Burnley, at the time Luke Chadwick was having his medical but the club only could sign 1 of them at the time and even tho the other 2 passed better the Chadwick, the former scum got the contract

  • verdo1 says:

Forget about it as we did not pay £20 million for
Henderson..It was closer to £13 million with extras if trophies were won..

    • Juric says:

Assuming you are right, mate, then Henderson will remain at £13 million throughout his Liverpool career because LFC aren’t going to win any trophies.

  • Paul says:

I’m made up Pool didn’t sign him, he’s nowhere near good enough for us
