Liverpool are the frontrunners to sign Marseille midfielder Maxime Lopez, according to Le Parisien (via Foot-sur7).

The Reds were linked with the youngster previously when it was revealed that the Merseyside club and Arsenal attempted to sign the player before he signed a professional contract at the age of 16 two years ago.

The French newspaper now say that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has a firm interest in signing the 18 year old and are the club most likely to buy him. Whether Marseille would be willing to part company with Lopez is another matter.

The Ligue One side were recently taken over by an American businessman Frank McCourt after a number of years in financial difficulties. It is unlikely that the French club will allow the player dubbed the “next Samir Nasri” to go cheaply.

Lopez has broken in to the first team this season under manager Rudi Garcia with six appearances in all competitions with his first starts coming in Marseille’s last two league matches.
