Gary Lineker was drooling over Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah after the Egyptian opened the scoring in the team’s 1-0 win against Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

The Reds frontman has received criticism from certain quarters of late, with his performances not quite reaching the stunning standards he set last season in the early part of this campaign.

However, Lineker has defended the player: “Salah scores. He’s a proper player not a flash in the pan,” he tweeted on his personal Twitter account.

“All goal-scorers, however good they are, go through spells where it doesn’t happen for them,” he finished, perhaps remembering times of adversity in his own career.

OPINION

It’s no surprise to see an ex striker like Lineker come out in defence of fellow frontman Salah. It’s true, the Egyptian hasn’t been at his best this term – especially compared to last campaign’s consistently sparkling showings – but he’s not been poor by any stretch of the imagination. Goals come and go for players, unless your name is Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi, but the top marksmen always find them again. That’s what Salah is: one of the finest attackers operating in world football. He was always going to get back to his best and perhaps Saturday’s showing against Huddersfield will precipitate the kind of ferocious goal-scoring that the 26-year-old produced last time out. There is no doubt that Salah isn’t a flash in a pan and to suggest otherwise is tantamount to insanity. There are too many ex players who jump on bandwagons and criticise players when things aren’t going well, so it’s refreshing to see Lineker come out in defence of the Reds frontman.
