Liverpool are prepared to let Divock Origi leave on a free transfer when his contract expires at the end of next season, according to ESPN.

The broadcaster claims that even though Origi, 25, has a close relationship with sporting director Michael Edwards, the Reds would be ready to let the Belgium international see out his contract as they will not sell him this summer.

It is understood that Edwards believes Origi can still contribute to Jurgen Klopp’s first team but as the forward values game-time over his bank balance, there’s a chance that he could be up for grabs on a free in 2020 if he does not pen fresh terms.

OPINION

Edwards is right about Origi because he was involved in some of the best moments of Liverpool’s wonderful 2018/19 season. Although he had to wait until December for his first Premier League outing of the campaign, it was to come off the bench and score a late-minute winner against Merseyside rivals Everton. He also became an Anfield hero when his brace against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-finals helped produce one of Europe’s most dramatic turnarounds. Origi then scored the second goal in Liverpool’s win against Tottenham in the final in Madrid. Origi is a superb player and seems like a great professional. He does not play enough and if he wants to quit Anfield and earn more game-time elsewhere then no Liverpool fan should give him grief for that. Origi has been a great servant for Liverpool and he won’t be short of suitors this time next year if his contract does end up expiring.
