Liverpool decided against making a move to land French winger Franck Ribery this summer, according to L’Equipe, and cited by the Daily Mail.

The 36-year-old is without a club after leaving Bayern Munich during the current transfer window, having won nine Bundesliga titles during his time with the German giants.

And it is understood that Jurgen Klopp, who used to manage arch rivals Borussia Dortmund, was tempted to offer a chance to play in England, but eventually decided against the idea.

OPINION

Given the wealth of attacking talent Liverpool have at their disposal, plus the plethora of young forwards they have knocking on the door, this was probably the right call from Klopp in the end, but it still would have been something to witness. Ribery is a special, special player who has been lighting up the continent for years now. Even now, well into his 30s, he is still a very dangerous threat. He may not have played too regularly last season for Bayern, starting just 10 games in the league, but he managed six goals and three assists, and averaged 2.8 successful dribbles per 90 minutes, as well as a pass completion rate of 82.5% [Whoscored]. Class is permanent, and even as the joints begin to ache a little and the legs begin to tire, players like Ribery continue to create magic wherever they go. It’s probably for the best that his next move isn’t to Anfield, but it would have been a lot of fun to watch had Klopp decided to make his move.
