OPINION

Many eyebrows would have been raised when Liverpool released their teamsheet for the UEFA Super Cup final against Chelsea. There were notable omissions from the side, with both Roberto Firmino and Trent Alexander-Arnold missing despite starring against Norwich City. Joe Gomez was shifted from the heart of defence to right-back and failed to make much of an impact, being caught out of position numerous times after trying to get forward and affect the game for Jurgen Klopp. Chelsea’s opened the scoring in Istanbul when Christian Pulisic’s ball through found Olivier Giroud, who was free in Gomez’ area and easily finished past Adrian. The 22-year-old is primarily a central defender, having averaged 2.4 clearances and 1.1 tackles per game last season, but only managing 0.4 key passes and 0.3 completed dribbles according to WhoScored, two stats which prove he is much better placed in a deeper central role. Many Liverpool fans took to Twitter to slam Gomez for his performance in a wider position, with the majority pointing out that he isn’t a right-back, while others chose to call the youngster both “shocking” and “absolutely dire.”
