OPINION

If you need an example of how complex Jordan Henderson’s relationship with the Liverpool fanbase is, look no further than his performance against Tottenham on Sunday. The Reds’ skipper was arguably at fault for Spurs’ opening goal in the match, being dispossessed easily in the centre of the park by Harry Winks to set off a series of blunders that led to Harry Kane converting an improvised header. At the other end of the spectrum, it was his cute finish that allowed his side to draw level, and that ultimately set them on their way to taking all three points in a 2-1 win. But for all of his work ethic and willingness to make up for his mistake, there are many supporters who are coming to the end of their tether with the captain. To an extent, you can understand why. There are games when he doesn’t appear to offer much at all. His pass completion rate in the Premier League this season, for example, is just 78.4%, as per Whoscored, and just 0.3 of those passes per game have been key. Fabinho is a more defensive option, Henderson doesn’t offer a great deal on the front foot, and you do have to wonder how much longer Jurgen Klopp will continue to put his faith in the England international.
