Luis Suarez, Pepe Reina and sweaty shirts…

Liverpool FCANOTHER week has passed, and apart from the new away kits all is more or less well in the world of Liverpool FC. No matter how many column inches the newspapers spend speculating or how many hours we spend discussing it: as I write this neither Pepe Reina nor Luis Suarez have left the club.

That doesn’t mean it won’t happen though. As it stands right now it seems like a bit of a fifty-fifty situation regarding both players, and also like a bit of a stand-off: neither player wants to deny or confirm too much, apart from being committed to the club unless Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively come after them. That’s basically the gist of the situation as I see it.

We all probably have different opinions on whether we should allow them to leave or not should the situation arise. The way I see it, Liverpool Football Club is in a unique situation. We are obviously a huge club with enormous potential, constantly a few astute signings and right decisions away from clawing ourselves back up there. But it doesn’t change the fact that we have spent the last four seasons establishing ourselves as a mid-table team. A mid-table team with the potential of becoming a top team within a couple of years, yes; but still a mid-table team.

Players like Reina and Suarez have personal ambitions, and as things stand we are not in a position to help them fulfil those ambitions. And it’s not like they owe us anything either; they left their previous clubs in order to play and challenge for big trophies at a higher level, and as long as we are not top of the food chain there will always be a risk of certain players leaving. Pepe in particular has been with us longer than you would expect, considering how the club has developed the last few years.

Ultimately though, we all want the same thing: We all want what is best for LFC and we want Brendan Rodgers to be able to field the best possible team next season.
[ad_pod id=”unruly-video” align=”center”]
Then what exactly is best for LFC? Is it to let them go, take the money and concentrate on finding good replacements; or do we draw a line and make them stay, even if it’s against their own wishes? Can we honestly claim to be in a position to do so? I don’t think many Ajax fans shed too many tears when Suarez left them to join Liverpool; after all it was a natural step up to a bigger and better league. It’s simply the way it is.

Given our lack of progression since his arrival, I don’t think we can have too many complaints if he decides it’s time to make the final step on the career ladder. As for Pepe Reina, I certainly won’t hold a grudge towards anyone if he gets the opportunity to return home.

Ajax found a way without Luis Suarez – in fact they’re a better team now than when he was there. Players like him can never be directly replaced, but it’s very much a possibility to use the opportunity to create an even better team if he ends up leaving. But it requires being proactive and ahead of the situation by having the replacements lined up, ready to sign the papers, before he leaves.

By the way, did I mention the new away kits?

This is what happens when people who don’t know what they’re doing – and don’t have a clue about what football fans want – try to be ‘innovative’ and ‘cutting edge’. I’m sure there are dozens of sweaty shirts, gallons of coffee and many a late night of tossing ideas left lying in the trail of this gore fest of a train wreck known as next season’s Liverpool away kit. Extensive market and business analysis have probably been made to find out how to maximise everything that possibly can be maximised, and I’m guessing the amount of time and money that could have been saved by not hiring someone from the outside to design them is enough to provoke a stomach ulcer on a rubber duck.

My opinion? They more or less take the regular kit buyers for granted and use the away and third kit to attract new buyers. Simple. The ones who really – when push comes to shove – don’t care too much about the club or football in general, and just want something ‘hip’ to wear. Because if they really wanted to know what the fans wanted, all they had to do was to invite fans to send in their suggestions and let those same fans decide. At least that’s my simplistic view of it.

I don’t really blame FSG though, because it’s the way of the world and the way of football: Money talks. Money means better players. Take the £25m, drop your pants and smile to the nice man behind the camera.

Rant over.

  • Ray Maxie says:

Remember when .BR was employed it showed then that we were a midtable team. No vision, let see give him the first 10 games

  • Dawnga says:

You know what? It doesn’t really matter anymore. There is a thing called CHANGE in the world. FSG can do all the shrewd bussiness in the transfer window they want, but as long as teams like Monaco, Man City etc with megarich owners keep cropping up we are never competing on top AGAIN! Reality check 1! FSG are just not rich enough. Fullstop. We should’ve waited for a Shiekh to come buy LFC instead of FSG. No Yankee can compete will a Shiekh in terms of ‘ka ching!’ Reality check 2

    • Gary Jackson says:

You are totally correct. You can not compete at the top without investing heavily , arsenal have shown it not possible anymore .We will never be a major force until FSG sell to someone willing to spend .

    • Gary Jackson says:

Ps. FSG ARE rich enough. They have a combined estimated fortune of over 5 billion. They choose not to spend because they are here to make it not spend it

      • Vince says:

Financial Fair play will come in soon. Then all clubs will be penalised and capped on spending more than thru earn. So it will be club turnover that matters, not deep pockets of far eastern or American owners. These guys are smart as well as rich. They invest in sports companies so actually care about their teams and their longevity. FSG are already operating and putting in measures to help us comply with financial FairPlay. So we’ll be ready. Creating revenue and spending it well and williningly! Then the other rich teams that have never had it so good will be screwed. £150 million invested in the stadium seat capacity will more than help! Who says they’re not spending?! All you armchair chairmen (excuse the pun) haven’t got a clue what’s being done, obviously. The away kit’s nice by the way. Better than the Adidas kits, which all look the same no matter what the team! As long as they get their three stripes on the sleeves! Onwards and up wards! Stop moaning about a shirt we’ll wear 5 times and get behind the team! YNWA

You really are a deluded fool. You have no idea of what your talking about

Financial fair play ? Ha . City have already shown that is easily got around

If you believe in that , you probably still believe in Santa. Actually you must be totally gullible to believe the stuff FSG come out with anyway

Keep fantasizing and stop telling fans how to support you muppet

        • stevieG says:

Talking boll@cks vince .FFP ? Lol

        • Liam says:

Anyone thinkin FFP will work is not thinkin straight. Monaco is proof . 6000 home attendance and they just bought Falcao. Wake up

        • kav says:

          You haven’t got a clue

  • seano says:

FSG gave 100 plus million and what did we get – carrol, hendo, downing, adam.Reality check 1 – fast forward Borini,Allen, assaidi equals +/- 30 mil. Total 130 mil less Torres 50 mil. Lesson still not learned if u buy average u finish 7th. Hendo, borini, wisdom, robinson look poor playing u21 – says a lot doesn’t it

  • Raam says:

And why are we arguing about this.Shout as loud as you want, nothing is going to change.the owners, BR or even the so called awful kit will remain. There is no need to call others fool or whatsoever. They are just giving their opinion. Instead we can let our frustration be known to the FA and FIFA regarding Spanish clubs who openly invite EPL players to play in their league but they are complaining that EPL clubs draining their young talents.
