talkSPORT presenter Adrian Durham believes that rival fans don’t want Liverpool to win the Premier League because of the club’s fanbase.

The Reds’ faithful have garnered a reputation for getting overly excited when their team is doing well, only to see them fall at the final hurdle. This, Durham believes, is why other supporters don’t want them winning the top prize this season.

“They keep going on about ‘oh, this is our year, this is our year, this is our year’,” he said on talkSPORT [16/04; 16:44]. “It’s not your year, you’ve got to earn that.

“You can’t say it’s going to be your year, you’ve got to earn that. So people don’t like the fact that they bang on about that. But we also know, all of us know, that Liverpool fans will never, ever, stop talking about it if they win the league – like they refuse to stop talking about Istanbul.”

OPINION

To be honest, and this doesn’t happen very often, Durham may have a point here. Liverpool supporters, and this is obviously an unfair generalisation, aren’t always the most gracious in victory or humble in defeat. That, plus the fact that the team have had a few fortuitous decisions go their way this season, is probably why some rival fans don’t want them to win the Premier League. To be fair, the Reds faithful do always seem convinced that each season is going to be the one where they finally claim that elusive league title. They make a big song and dance about it and then it falls through. That might change this time round, but still. And as Durham says, the supporters don’t stop talking about Istanbul. To be fair, you can’t really blame them for that. That was a special night even for non-Liverpool fans, so it’s no surprise they enjoy reminiscing about it, is it?
