The agent of Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has admitted that his goal is to secure an Anfield exit for the Belgian this summer.

The 31-year-old saw his role seriously reduced by the arrival of Brazilian shot-stopper Alisson last summer, but manager Jurgen Klopp wants him to stay at the club.

The Mignolet camp, though, appear to think differently: “The goalkeeper game of musical chairs hasn’t started yet,” the player’s agent told Les Sports Plus, via the Daily Express. “It’s important for Simon to play somewhere, and our goal is still to make him leave.

“He’s still got a lot to offer, and if we have an offer, we’re counting on Liverpool making an effort.”

OPINION

It’s hard to blame Mignolet and his team for wanting to leave Liverpool this summer. It’s clear from what happened last term that he’s not going to be playing regular football at Anfield any time soon. He is very much second choice on Merseyside and can only really expect to play low profile Carabao Cup and FA Cup games moving forward. So can we really blame him for wanting to move somewhere he can feature on a more consistent basis? That, seemingly, is still the goal for him and his representatives this summer. However, that doesn’t really jive with what Klopp wants to do with him. The German clearly wants to keep the Belgian international around as a top class understudy to Alisson, but it’s not fair to keep Mignolet at the club perpetually when you know he’s never going to play regular football. So we’re suddenly in a bit of a sticky situation, here.
